The cliffs above Dhërmi were shaped by Karst limestone that dissolves faster in seawater than in rain, which is why the coastline below is punctured with caves rather than worn smooth.
That geology defines the whole stretch of shore between Dhërmi Beach and Grama Bay, and it explains why arrival by sea has always mattered more here than arrival by road.
Dhërmi sits beneath the Ceraunian Mountains, on a slope the Greeks called Akrokeraunia — the thunder-split peaks. Roman and Byzantine vessels sheltered in these coves. At Grama Bay, roughly 20 kilometres north, sailors carved their names into the quarry walls between the fourth century BC and the nineteenth century, leaving several hundred inscriptions in Greek, Latin, and later scripts. The bay has no road. It has never had one. The inscriptions survive because only a boat can reach them, and a dhermi private boat tour remains the sole practical way to stand in front of that stone.
The wider Karaburun Peninsula, protected since 2010 as Albania's first marine national park, closes the northern horizon. Its sea caves — including the Blue Cave, where refracted light turns the water a saturated cobalt — sit at the base of vertical walls that drop straight into 30 metres of water. Gjipe Beach, to the south, marks the point where the Gjipe Canyon meets the Ionian; the gorge narrows to a few metres between 70-metre walls before opening onto shingle.
Under Communist rule, this coast was militarised and effectively closed. Concrete bunkers still stud the headlands. Tourism arrived late, and quickly: the fishing skiffs that once worked these waters now run private excursions, and skippers descended from those crews still read the afternoon Ionian wind the way their fathers did.
What that history leaves behind is a coastline legible only from the water. The village above, with its stone-roofed houses and Byzantine chapels, is one thing. The shoreline is another — a sequence of coves, quarry marks, and cave mouths, each unreachable on foot.
